Welcome to my Jay Chou Shrine!

This page is both an homage to Jay Chou, the Taiwanese singer and composer, and the graphic design of early 2000s fansites and personal blogs. I've wanted to make a page in this style for a long time, so I hope you can enjoy it even if you have no idea who Jay Chou is! ^^

So why Jay Chou?

Possibly the best selling musician in China of all time, Jay Chou is one of my all time favourite artists even though I have only been listening to his music for a few years. I am particularly inspired by his beautiful compositions which are often so unique and unlike any other music I have heard before. In the song 藍色風暴 (Blue Storm) for instance, the melody is composed of a phone ringtone and like monks chanting which sounds totally insane but it actually works... trust me. As someone whose Mandarin probably worse than a kindergartener I find myself focusing on melody and rhythm alot more than I would with other artists - one could argue that I am missing a huge part of the music experience but I don't mind so much (I do know that his lyricist for many of his songs, Vincent Fang, is immensely talented so it is good motivation for me to study harder!)

Where to start?

Jay has 14 LPs, 1 soundtrack album, 5 EPs and a handful of live albums. That's a pretty huge and overwhelming/ exciting discography! His albums all follow a classic formula of half ballardy slower songs and half upbeat hip-hop, rap, electronic, rock songs so I like to think that everyone can find something they like in each album. I would recommend definitely listening to his (imo) best albums, like 七里香 (Common Jasmine Orange) or 十一月的蕭邦 (November's Chopin) if you are interested in listening to his music :)
